Parking Issue for Students
By LUCIUS ANTHONY
Every day I have to wake up a good 10 minutes earlier just so that I have time to walk up to school from the lower lot. Today it was 28 degrees Fahrenheit and the walk up seemed never ending. When I got to the school I thought I was early because no one was in the hall -- but what I ended up realizing was that I was 8 minutes late and I had arrived at the lower lot right before class had started, thinking that I would be able to make it on time.
If Animas had a normal parking area for their students then I could be getting to the parking lot at 8:18 A.M and still be on time. I wouldn't have to worry about missing important information, having to interrupt class and ask what's going on, or have to get a tardy note.
Due to the unorganized parking, I have a couple friends that have had to bring their cars into the shop to get worked on for the mud and dirt getting in the brakes and the undercarriage of the cars, and students can’t afford to get new brakes so all they can do is get them checked up, which still is expensive.
The price for new brakes can vary from ($300-800) whereas brake pads are only ($100-300). However, most students don’t have jobs and the few that do don't want to spend their money on brakes, especially when the reason we have to pay is because we had to go to school.
Another reason that some students have had to tune up or even replace their undercarriages which go from $200-300. Like I said before, students don't have the money to pay for this type of damage none the less when you have to pay for a whole new door and bumper because of someone crashing into you.
Most of the time the lower lot is to packed and there are cars parked everywhere in different directions, making it worrisome for students that have bought their own cars to leave them in the lower lot especially when we have the gravel lot because most student like to have fun and try to drift but might not always turn out the way they wanted it too.
The main problem that students have tried to address is that most of the teachers will get irritated by the fact of us showing up late to class but the funny thing is, is that in the small community of Durango we have 14 schools all of which have a parking lot right next to them including schools that are in rural areas still have a defined and organized parking system.
The one way we can solve this problem is by letting seniors park in the upper lot in the spaces by the zircons where there is nothing but junk sitting around. So instead of not using those spaces we should organize and find a proper place for the stuff and use it as parking spaces.
