Is Animas Trashy?
By LARREA HORNER
The health of the ecosystem in our community is essential and recycling plays a big part in that. Animas High School cares a lot about the environment so it is necessary for Animas students to recycle. Being able to recycle is a great way to improve our environment and it’s easy! The products made from recycled materials create less pollution, and use less energy, along with less water. Recycling helps our climate problems because it produces considerably less carbon, therefore reducing the amount of unhealthy greenhouse gasses. The Environmental Protection Agency states that, “Human activities (like not recycling) have produced a 40% increase in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide since 1750.”
Recycling also reduces the amount of landfills. Statistics from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show that in 2009, the amount of trash sent to landfills nationwide averaged nearly three pounds daily, per person, in contrast to about one and one-half pounds of materials recycled. The benefits of recycling compared to the disadvantages of landfilling makes recycling a painless decision.
Recycling saves lots of energy, and energy costs money. We save energy on consumption and that ends up keeping production costs down. Economic benefits are also a recycling plus. Landfill space costs money for state and local governments. Recycling though, produces an income through tax revenues for local, state, and federal governments. Basically recycling makes money because it gets recycled into the same thing over again. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that, “recycling enterprises produce an estimated $236 billion in annual revenues.” For millions of people, recycling offers employment, with wages above the national average, frequently providing jobs in urban areas with above-average unemployment rates.
Recycling is a push in the right direction. There is trash everywhere around our school and no one is taking responsibility for their actions. If Animas High School were to make recycling accessible to its students and staff it would be convenient for the whole school. Having a “trashy school” is a bad reputation, but the cleanup is simple.
It is very easy to start recycling. In Durango it is free to recycle as long as you live in the city limits. Durango also also has a free glass recycling plant, located at the Durango Tech Center.
Being able to recycle is a gift to us all because the amount of trash going into the world is toxic and harmful. Our school should start to make a difference and recycle for the sake of ourselves and the environment.
