Gun Control: The Facts Behind the Argument
By PETER OLES
Guns have shaped America more almost than anything. They have been present in nearly all of the cases where history was made. These cases include: The revolutionary war, the assassination of President Lincoln, and the attack on pearl harbor. Weapons have completely shaped our country and our founding fathers knew it would happen. They put in an amendment to make sure the American people would forever have a means of protection, even as they had fought against Britain. All of these great events that were shaped by guns and violence now mean nothing to America. There has been an obvious increase in gun related crime and this is forcing the country to take measures against violence.
In the eyes of student's researching at Duke University, the once great country of America has become a violent and lazy society. . Their study has shown that most firearms, no matter how traceable they are, were stolen for crimes. The students believe that this is because thieves don't want the hassle of dealing with the background checks and 16 day wait to obtain a gun. The government considers ending this by making the theft of a firearm a felony in and of itself so as to scare away any possibility of gun thieves. The government also wants to make background checks more thorough in hopes of using the fact that the country is lazy to ensure that those with criminal intent have to rethink their motives over the time it takes for the background checks to go through. Another fact that makes it so gun control is necessary is that the more guns there are the more crime there is. This is an inescapable fact because a gun is the easiest way to commit a crime. When there are more harsh gun control laws in place there WILL be a decrease in crime rates, even if it is small. Despite the size of the change, it will be a change and people will be able to sleep better at night because they know that it is less likely for them to be harmed than it was ten years ago.
Despite all of these pieces of evidence that should be locking down the gun control laws, there are still some that have fought and made it their career to keep loose gun control laws. A national television debate on the subject showed someone saying that the second amendment only applies to single shot muskets. The debate then took a turn in which they argued this point to a point where they talked about how people didn't know that more kinds of weapons would appear.
Among all of the arguments that have been used that one was the worst. It is a prime example of people showing their bias in full and trying to shut down the second amendment.
Among all of the arguments there has been a case of people getting gun deaths and gun homicides mixed up. In the US, there are only about 3 people out of every 100,000 people who are murdered with a gun. There is more than double that with suicides, accidental shootings and self defense shootings. Another fact is that despite Americans saying that gun control will not only take down on murder, but also suicide. There are so many facts that go against this. By now, everyone is aware that North Korea has some of the most strict gun laws. What people may not know is that they also have the second highest suicide rate in the world. The most common method of suicide in that country is bug poison. This means that taking away guns would make almost no difference whatsoever. There is a very interesting quote from The New Yorker, written by... He/she states “Like a federal travel ban for Ebola, people will be able to circumvent gun control.” During the Ebola outbreak, federal authorities were unwilling to put a travel plan into place because people would just find a way around it. If people were able to find a way to get an airplane or a helicopter without the government's consent, people would easily be able to obtain lethal weapons.
There are immeasurable things that can be argued for, as well as against, but the facts are clear. Gun control is something we need, although how much of it and how we go about doing it is very important. Restricting guns is something that needs to happen in our society. Taking them away is how you start an uprising - so the US government needs to meet the American people in the middle and come to an agreement that isn't taking all guns away, but also isn't leaving everything how it is right now.
